A very vibrant and colorful area of the downtown core, home to the highest pedestrian traffic in Canada, make the Church Street Corridor one of the most walkable neighbourhoods in Toronto. Yonge and Dundas Street, make this neighbourhood a very desirable location. The neighbourhood’s boundaries are from Yonge Street to the West, Bloor Street to the North, Queen Street to the South and includes Sherbourne Street as well.
Church Street Corridor is well known for it’s unique street events, restaurants, bars, shops and diverse community. This area has been home to the Toronto gay community for decades. It is home to the annual Pride week celebrations. Located in Cawthra park, is the AIDS Memorial where names of residents of this community who have been lost to the disease are etched onto bronze plaques. Each year during Pride Week, a memorial candlelight vigil is held.
The neighbourhood is home to popoular Church Street Community Centre which is a meeting place for many social and political groups, also known as an LGBT-friendly space. It is also a historic neighbourhood with apartments and Victorian homes that date back to the late 19th and early 20th century.
The Wellesley subway station on the Yonge-University-Spadina line gives the residents of this community access to the cities subway system. Stations that are within walking distance are, Bloor -Yonge, College, Bloor-Yonge, and Sherbourne (on the Danforth Line) as well as frequent bus and streetcar service. The Church Street corridor also has a happening night scene including popular watering holes such as Woody’s, Black Eagle, Fuzion and Boutique and Flash.
